The York City Police Department, PA, has recently purchased three WCCTV Solar Surveillance Trailers to target high crime areas and protect local communities.
York City Police Department has a new tool in its fight against neighborhood crime - three Solar Surveillance Trailers.
The police solar surveillance trailers have been deployed as part of what York Police Commissioner Michael Muldrow has dubbed Operation Knightwatch, a city-wide program that aims to increase safety in areas associated with drugs, prostitution, and firearms.
Funding for the trailers has come from WellSpan Health, meaning there is no cost to taxpayers.
Speaking on the specific benefits of the mobile surveillance trailers, and why they are critical to the objectives of Operation Knightwatch, Commissioner Muldrow referenced the ease with which the units can be relocated:
"As crime and disorder moves, we move" he stated, adding, “We’ll be able to bring a truck out and move [a camera] to the next spot and keep [criminals] guessing like they have always kept us guessing.”
The ability to relocate the trailer in response to emerging crime patterns and to respond to local residents' requests for additional surveillance will create a hostile environment for criminals and result in a net decrease in crime rates.
The trailers feature multiple camera heads, creating a 'halo' coverage effect in areas affected by crime and delivering high-quality video evidence any time of day or night.
The primary pole camera is a pan-tilt-zoom unit with a 40x zoom, while the secondary camera has four fixed views.
All live video feeds can be accessed via any connected device, such as a cellphone, tablet, or laptop, allowing officers to gather evidence and observe situations in real-time.
The trailer also stores all video recorded for up to 30 days, allowing for evidence gathering and investigation.
Commissioner Muldrow was keen to emphasize that the trailer would not take the place of officers in the community, but will instead augment their efforts:
“Our officers are wonderful. They do an amazing job. But how do you make Batman even better? You have to give him the tools,” Muldrow said.
WCCTV spokesperson Daniel del Soldato commented on yet another successful rollout of surveillance trailers to support the nation's police departments:
"At WCCTV, we are proud to back the blue, and supplement the vital work they do in making communities safer. We recognize that policing is getting harder every day, but we are confident our technology platform gives law enforcement the edge when it comes to fighting crime."
